The last step, the final polish, the finishing touch!
Proofreading involves checking a theoretically ready-to-go text for the errors that have inevitably been overlooked or accidentally introduced during earlier editorial rounds such as copyediting. It facilitates an immersive experience for your audience by tidying up these distractions.
A proofreader aims for minimal changes while making sure there aren’t any missing periods, misspelled words, or wild formatting moments—carefully examining every word, space, punctuation mark, and other element.
Because we’re all trying to be kind and get it right, I always query, explain, and propose solutions if I encounter language or storytelling that strikes me as potentially harmful to readers because of connections to ableism, racism, fat phobia, classism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, or any other cultural yuckiness. While this kind of intervention is outside the scope of proofreading, I believe that every pair of eyes on every text is a chance to prevent harm and include more readers in the delights we all deserve.
