Editors Learn Together Unconference
17–23 April 2023

Picture
a Heart of the Story event
The Editors Learn Together Unconference is intended as a free, chill, supportive, inclusive, nerdy, and fun professional development space where participants will:
  • set and share goals for the week
  • knock out (or at least get started on!) some of those courses, webinars, editing-related articles/books/podcast episodes, and so on that we all have in giant piles just waiting for the right time
  • share enthusiasm, resources, and how we’re doing with our goals
  • keep each other company while we learn!
It's a whole week long in hopes of working for different schedules and rhythms, and you're welcome to participate at any level, from jumping all-in as an immersive week-long excuse to get a whole lot done ... to reading a few bookmarked blog posts and cheering on colleagues.

The Unconference will be hosted on the Heart of the Story Discord server, and although I hope to offer some opportunities for real-time chatting and check-ins, there's no need to be online at any particular time to participate.

Community rules

Longer guidelines, including information about how to help out with accessibility, will be posted on the Discord server. But to get started, here are the basics:
  • Be kind and respectful to each other, and in discussing folks not present too.
  • Ask before mentioning or distributing anything shared at the Unconference outside the group.
  • Help our community embrace diversity of gender identity and expression, sexuality, disability, how our brains work, body size, race, class, age, religion, and the many other axes of human coolness. We will prioritize marginalized people’s safety over privileged people’s comfort.
  • Use content warnings and alt text.
  • Use your real name (at least your first name)--and pronouns if you're comfortable--and introduce yourself.
By participating, you're agreeing to follow these rules and also committing to the spirit of them.

How to participate

It's easy! Just email me with your name and website URL (and/or a little about yourself), and I’ll include you when I send out invitations to the server in advance of the event. (Note: I will not share the URL or other information with the group, so don't stress about it; I just want to do a lil safety check that everybody appears to be a real person participating in good faith.)
